Once we start, the room has to stay empty (couch, rugs, and all) until everything dries and cures. ## What the Slabs Look Like in Newer Georgetown Homes A lot of Georgetown homes sit on a slab at ground level, from Sun City and Berry Creek to newer sections of Wolf Ranch and Cimarron Hills. Smaller commercial spaces along Williams Drive and the interstate have much the same kind of concrete. Newer slabs are often flatter and less patched than the ones in older Austin homes, which helps. They come with problems of their own, though. Curing compound (the film sprayed on fresh concrete as it cures) can still sit on top. Machine troweling can leave the surface so tight it barely soaks anything up. And some garage slabs haven't been ground at all, so when one calls for it, we grind it before any coating goes on. So why does the same stain look different on two slabs? Acid stain reacts one way on tight concrete and another way on an older, more open slab. Water based stain and polished concrete each act differently on these surfaces too. That's one reason we typically test a small area before we agree on a color, and we don't quote a finish off a photo. Once the staining or polishing is done, the sealer protects the finish and sets how shiny it looks and how often it needs upkeep. On a sunny patio we'd pick a sealer designed to resist UV, and indoors we match the sheen to how you use the room.
