Why Outdoor Concrete Needs Its Own Plan

An interior floor deals with furniture, foot traffic, and the occasional spill. A patio deals with months of direct sun, driving rain, constant heating and cooling, standing water, leaves, barbecue grease, and bare feet. We've worked on both kinds of concrete across Austin since 2001. The gap between the two is why we plan outdoor resurfacing on its own terms instead of carrying an indoor system outside.

We resurface and stain exterior concrete across Austin: patios, pool decks, walkways, entries, and driveways. A backyard in West Lake Hills and a pool deck in Steiner Ranch would each get a system picked for the sun and weather they see. That's why our first questions are about sun, shade, drainage, and how you use the space, not color.

What Resurfacing Can Do Outdoors

  • Renew a weathered, discolored, or dated slab with a fresh decorative surface
  • Replace a tired broom finish with a knockdown, stamped overlay, or cool deck texture picked for grip and comfort
  • Add color that goes with the house instead of plain gray concrete
  • Cut in lines or a pattern to break up a big, plain slab
  • Help keep the surface cooler with lighter colors and the right texture

What It Can't Do

It can't fix a slab that has sunk or is still moving. That needs concrete repair or a new slab, which is outside our decorative work. It can't fix water that drains the wrong way either. Fixing the slope is outside our decorative work too, and we'll talk through options during the consultation, including who handles that work. And it can't make a west facing slab with no shade feel cool in an Austin August. Only shade does that, though the right finish helps.

Heat, Grip, and the Two Choices That Matter Most

Color and texture are the two choices that change how the patio feels every day.

Start with color, since it decides how hot the surface gets. A dark stained patio looks rich in photos, but it soaks up a lot more heat than a lighter one. If the patio sits by a pool or sees bare feet all summer, we'll usually suggest lighter colors and explain why.

Texture affects both grip and heat. A cool deck or knockdown texture usually feels cooler under bare feet than smooth concrete and gives more grip when it's wet. A common patio mistake is a smooth, glossy finish. It looks sharp when it's dry. But one splash from the pool or a tipped dog bowl makes it slick and dangerous.

Where you need even more grip, like on steps and around water, we typically mix a slip additive into the sealer.

Drainage Comes First

Where does the water go when it rains? It's one of the first things we check before a surface goes down. Standing water gets into any finish sooner or later. It speeds up wear, feeds mildew and algae, and makes a winter freeze do more damage. If the slope is wrong, the drainage has to be fixed first. That's outside our decorative work, so we'll talk through options during the consultation, including who handles it. A new surface over a slab that holds water is money you'd end up spending twice.

UV Stable Sealers for Austin Patios

Outdoor sealers are a different kind of product from indoor ones. Sun is the main reason. Some indoor coatings, epoxy in particular, yellow in the sun, and film sealers can turn cloudy when moisture gets trapped under them. Penetrating sealers (silane and siloxane products) soak into the concrete instead of sitting on top, and that's typically where we start on a patio. Decorative film sealers give deeper color, but they need more upkeep.

Either way, outdoor sealer works harder than indoor sealer and needs redoing sooner. We'll suggest when to reseal based on the sun your patio gets and how you use it, not a one size fits all number. Your written proposal names the exact sealer for your job.

What Changes the Price Outdoors

Outdoor pricing comes down to size, condition, how detailed the texture is, color, and sealer. Shape matters more outside than inside, since curved edges, steps, and pool coping all take extra hand work.

Weather is the other factor. Put an overlay or sealer down in the wrong heat or humidity and the problems show up months later. Any date in your proposal is an estimate. Weather, material availability, and site conditions can change it, and we'd rather move a date than rush a finish.

If comfort underfoot matters most, our guide to keeping outdoor concrete cool and slip resistant covers what color and texture can do in an Austin summer. For pricing, our breakdown of what patio resurfacing costs in Austin walks through each line of a quote. Outdoor work is one of the seven services we offer across Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and other towns in Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties. We confirm coverage before we book.

How much does patio resurfacing cost in Austin?

We quote based on your slab and the job. Here's what actually moves the price, so you can compare quotes on the same terms.

Square footage and the shape of the area, since curved edges and steps add labor.

The shape the surface is in now, including flaking, cracks, and old coatings or paint.

The texture and finish you pick, from a plain broom finish to hand applied knockdown or cut in patterns.

How we handle color, since stain acts differently outside than inside.

Which outdoor sealer goes down and whether it gets a slip additive.

Drainage problems that someone has to fix first, which is outside our decorative work.

Steps, pool coping, and edge work around the main slab.

Scheduling around the weather, since outdoor work can't be rushed in bad conditions.

What your quote should include

A good quote ties the price to the prep work, the products, travel, and what's left out. Ask to see the full job in writing. Your written proposal typically names the system, what's in, what's out, and any minimum charge.

Every job starts with a look at your slab. The scope, the price, and what you can expect depend on your slab's condition, the setting, and the job itself. This page covers how we usually work. Your signed written proposal is what governs the actual work. If the work turns up something we couldn't see before, like moisture or damage under an old coating, we talk it through with you before we go on.

Why us

Why people pick us for their patios

We plan for the heat

Dark surfaces get hot underfoot in August. We treat color and texture as a comfort choice as much as a style one.

Grip comes before shine

Wet exterior concrete is where people slip. We pick the texture and slip additive for your surface up front, not as an afterthought.

We check drainage first

Water that pools will find its way into any surface. We look at how the slab slopes before we recommend a finish.

Only products made for outdoors

Many interior sealers yellow or break down in the sun. Your written scope lists the exact outdoor product we'll use.

We're clear about what resurfacing fixes

Resurfacing gives a worn patio a fresh surface. A slab that's moving or sinking is a different problem.

We schedule around the weather

We'd rather reschedule than put down a finish in weather that will ruin it.

Process

How a patio job works

  1. 1

    We check sun and drainage

Before we recommend anything, we look at sun, shade, slope, where water pools, and how you actually use the space.

  2. 2

    We prep the surface

We clean it, strip coatings that are failing, and repair chips and small cracks. When the slab calls for it, we rough it up so the new layer grabs.

  3. 3

    Resurface or stain

We put down an outdoor overlay in the texture you picked, or we prep and stain the concrete you already have.

  4. 4

    Seal it for outdoor use

A UV stable outdoor sealer goes on, with slip additive where it's needed. Then it has to cure, so follow the cure guidance we go over with you.

Questions

Common patio questions

Can an old, weathered patio be resurfaced?
Usually yes, as long as the concrete underneath is solid. Weathering, discoloration, light spalling (where the top layer flakes off), and a dated broom finish are all things resurfacing can handle. What it can't fix is a slab that has sunk, one that keeps moving and cracking, or one that's breaking apart. We look at the slab and the drainage first, then tell you whether we think resurfacing is the right fix or would only hide the problem.
How do you keep a concrete patio from getting too hot?
You have two things to work with: color and texture. Lighter colors bounce back a lot more heat than dark ones. A textured cool deck surface usually feels cooler on bare feet than a smooth one. Shade matters more than either. If your patio faces west with no shade at all, color and texture will make it better, but they won't make it cool. We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a dark stained patio you can't walk on in August.
Will an exterior stained patio fade?
Outdoor concrete takes sun, rain, and constant heating and cooling in a way indoor floors don't. With proper care, reactive stains typically hold their color well outside, since the color comes from a chemical reaction with the concrete itself. A UV stable outdoor sealer on top helps protect it. Even so, outdoor sealer wears faster, and color can soften if the patio goes too long without a fresh coat. No outdoor finish in Central Texas stays the same year after year.
Is a resurfaced patio slippery when wet?
That comes down to what finish goes on it. A smooth, glossy outdoor surface is dangerous when it's wet. A knockdown texture (splattered on, then flattened) or a broom finish usually gives more grip. Mixing a slip additive (a fine grit) into the sealer adds more. Around pools, on steps, and anywhere the ground slopes, we normally plan for wet feet. Texture and additive help reduce the risk, but no wet surface is fully slip proof. Keep wet areas dry and use mats where people walk in from outside.
Do you do driveways?
Yes. We handle driveway resurfacing as part of this service, so it doesn't have its own page. Driveways add a few things to think about: the weight of cars, hot tires, oil stains, and big open areas. On a big slab, where we saw in the lines changes the whole look. We check it the same way, starting with whether the slab underneath is solid.
How long before we can use the patio?
You can usually walk on it within a day or two, depending on the product and the weather. Furniture goes back later, and a full cure takes longer still. The weather matters more outside than inside, since humidity and temperature both affect how the overlay and sealer set up. Your written proposal lists an estimated schedule. Weather, material availability, and site conditions can change it, so follow the care and cure guidance we go over with you.
Can you match the patio to an interior stained floor?
You can get close, but don't expect an identical match. Outdoor products, outdoor sealers, and all that sun give a different look than the same color family indoors. We aim for the two to go together on purpose instead of matching exactly, and that usually looks better anyway.
What maintenance does an exterior surface need?
Keep it swept, hose it down now and then, clean up stains from leaves and pots right away, and plan on resealing as it wears. Outdoor sealer takes more of a beating than indoor sealer, so you'll reseal sooner. When the job is done, we walk you through care, cure times, and upkeep for the product we put down and the sun and weather your patio gets. How the finish holds up depends on following those steps. If a question or concern comes up after the job, get in touch and we'll talk it through.
